The best paint or stain for a Fort Worth home or business depends on the surface, its existing finish, and how the space will be used. When we prepare an estimate at Landmark Property Services, those details guide our product recommendation. A brand name alone does not tell you which product belongs on cabinets, walls, exterior trim, or a wood fence.
Why we often use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore
We tend to use Sherwin-Williams paints and stains because we are familiar with the products and value the local store and sales-representative support. We also use Benjamin Moore, though less often. That is our working preference, rather than a claim that every product from one manufacturer is better than every alternative.
For a useful comparison, ask which product line is proposed, what surface it is intended for, what preparation it requires, and which finish is included. Any warranty should be read for the specific product and project rather than assumed from the manufacturer’s name.
A real project using two paint brands
In the project shown below, we installed new cabinets and ceilings and completed the painting. The homeowner preferred Sherwin-Williams “Extra White” for the ceilings and cabinets, while the gray walls were painted with Benjamin Moore. The original ceiling photograph identifies Sherwin-Williams ProClassic as the product used there.
The project is a practical example of using different manufacturers in the same room. We chose products and colors for the individual surfaces and the homeowner’s preferences. It does not mean a cabinet or trim coating is the default choice for every ceiling.

Our oil-based and latex cabinet-paint example
The photos below accompanied our comparison of Sherwin-Williams ProClassic oil-based and ProClassic latex finishes. In the original cabinet-door comparison, the oil-based finish was on the left and the latex finish on the right. We have used both for interior trim work.
The photographs are useful project examples, but they are not a controlled test of color or durability. For your own cabinets or trim, compare an actual sample of the proposed product and sheen in the room’s lighting. Confirm compatibility with the existing finish and follow the manufacturer’s preparation, recoating, and curing instructions.

Choosing paint for the surface and the room
- Walls and ceilings: Discuss the desired appearance, sheen, existing repairs, and how often the surface will need cleaning.
- Cabinets, doors, and trim: Ask about the exact coating, preparation of the old finish, and when the painted surfaces can return to normal use.
- Exterior surfaces: Identify the siding or trim material and existing coating before selecting the product. Check the manufacturer’s application requirements and any substrate-specific color restrictions.
- Commercial spaces: Explain the level of traffic and cleaning, along with access and scheduling needs, so the proposed finish fits the space.
Choosing a stain for exterior wood
For wood stain, start with the wood’s condition, its existing finish, and how much grain you want to see. Translucent and semi-transparent options reveal more of the grain; more opaque stains change the appearance more substantially. Benjamin Moore’s wood-stain selection guide explains these opacity choices.
Test the proposed stain on the actual wood and let it dry before deciding. The wood’s color and texture affect the result, so a screen image or a sample on a different board may not show what you will get. Confirm that the selected stain is suitable for the surface and existing coating.
What to ask when comparing painting estimates
- Which manufacturer, product line, color, and sheen are included for each surface?
- What preparation and primer, if needed, are included?
- How will damaged or failing areas be handled?
- What drying or curing time will affect use of the room, cabinets, or exterior area?
- What care instructions and written warranty terms apply?
